A glorious Malnad flower

One of the beautiful wild flowers found in Western Ghats in the months of August and September is Gloriosa Superba that belongs to Liliaceae family.

Common names in English include flame lily, climbing lily, creeping lily, glory lily, gloriosa lily, tiger claw and fire lily.

In Malnad, this flower is popularly known as gouri hoovu. The other names of the flower are agnishikhe, akka tangi balli, nungalika among others. It is also found in Africa, Indonesia and Sri Lanka.

With red and yellow colours merging in an unusual pattern, it could be rightly termed as the flower of the season. The plant has both religious and medicinal values and used in the treatment of scorpion bites.

During the Ganesh Chaturthi festival, this flower has special importance as it is considered as Goddess Gouramma, mother of Lord Ganesh and is worshipped with him and is finally immersed with the idol.

This plant is nowadays grown in gardens and used as a decorative and ornamental plant.
