Where trees wear sarees
It is amusing to see a tree covered by a sari. You may find such trees everywhere in the northern part of Karnataka.
People also put bangles on its branches and adorn it with garlands, light a lamp, arrange for a band for celebration, offer food and sacrifice animals like goat, sheep and fowl. All this is done seeking the blessing and boons of the gods.
A banyan tree and a fig tree are often united in matrimony to propitiate Varuna, the rain god. The bride, banyan tree is draped in a saree, while the groom, the fig tree, is draped in a dhoti. All these may be age-old superstitions, but they continue unabated.
