My son is fortunate enough to get admitted to this government college for PCMB," says Mahadevaswamy, a proud parent. This statement appears odd in a situation when private colleges are in high demand, particularly for Science stream. But Government PU College, Bannur, in T Narasipur taluk of Mysuru district, stands as an exception.
In spite of the limited availability of infrastructure, the college has been able to perform consistently good in academics. The campus is full of greenery, providing a good ambience. The classes are run from 9 am to 5 pm every day. The students are always engaged in one or the other learning activity throughout the day. Co-curricular activities are also given preference.
Special coaching classes for students are conducted in weekends and sometimes during holidays too! No additional fee is charged for this. Interestingly, more than 70% of the students in the college are girls. Goolegowda, a Chemistry lecturer says, "In 1996, Science stream was introduced in the college and the result of the first batch was zero!" The journey from zero to 90% result has been a combined effort of students, teachers and the community.
The community, specifically parents, has been supporting the efforts of the college since the beginning. It has contributed to improve the college infrastructure. Two big classrooms, well-equipped labs and other infrastructure have been made available with the support of parents and public. The improved quality of teaching gets reflected in the results of the college every year. Honnaiah, the principal, says; "Very few government colleges can boast of such performance in PCMB stream."
The overall passing percentage of the college has always remained above 80%, even reaching 90% once. "The credit should go to the team of lecturers who teach at the college," says Mahadevaswamy, who himself teaches at a private aided college elsewhere.
